Overlooking Canyon de Chelly in Arizona. This is one of the last Navajo Fortresses. This was used by the Navajo as a last stand against the encroaching Spanish settlement. The resistance to the Spanish occupation and settlement of the lands of Navajo or the "Diné" as they called themselves dragged on for more than 100 years. This huge rock formation stands at the junction of Del Muerto and Black Rock Canyons and was one of the last refuges used by the Navajo against enemy encroachment. It was used well into the 1860's.

Ghost town along old Route 66 in New Mexico.
With the promise of the coming of Interstate 40 the people in these small towns that dotted the American southwest believed they would be prospered by the increase in traffic.
Instead they quickly learned that I40 was not the blessing they had hoped for, but a curse instead. Although I40 brought millions of cars a year, most passed these small towns by without ever stopping. Instead of Prosperity the new highway brought ruin, and many simply packed up and moved away.

What was once a filling station along Route 66 is now just another building in one of the many ghost towns along old route 66 in New Mexico.
Although interstate 40 joined the coasts many of these small towns found themselves passed by.

Ghost town along old route 66 in New Mexico. Many small settlements such as this died when Interstate 40 was completed. What had once been a bustling highway with hundreds of cars passing daily became an almost forgotten stretch of empty pavement.

Ghost town along old route 66 in New Mexico.
Many of these small settlements had as their only source of income the travelers on Route 66.
With the completion of I40 the almost forgotten route no longer provided thousands of weary travelers looking for a place to refuel their cars, as well as their stomach's, and many of these small towns withered and died just like flowers without water.
